A short biography
The facts, without the legend. For the legend, there are the records.
Tupac Amaru Shakur was born on June 16, 1971 in East Harlem, New York. His mother, Afeni Shakur, a member of the Black Panthers, had just been acquitted in the Panther 21 trial, which she went through while pregnant with him. That political lineage is not a footnote: it runs through the entire body of work, from the earliest verses to the teenage poems.
As a teenager he studied at the Baltimore School for the Arts: theatre, poetry, dance, Shakespeare. Classmates from those years remember an actor, not yet a rapper. The family moved to Marin City, California, in 1988, and that is where everything tipped over: he joined the orbit of Digital Underground, first as a dancer and roadie, and dropped his first official verse in 1991 on Same Song.
Five years, five albums
It all fits into five years. 2Pacalypse Now (1991), a social-conscience record attacked all the way up to the vice-president of the United States. A second, harder album in 1993. Me Against the World (1995), written while awaiting trial and released during his incarceration: the first artist to top the Billboard 200 from a prison cell. Freed on bail in October 1995 thanks to Suge Knight, who paid it and signed him to Death Row, he recorded All Eyez on Me (1996), then, straight after, The Don Killuminati under the name Makaveli.
On September 7, 1996, after a Mike Tyson fight in Las Vegas, the car he was riding in was riddled with bullets. He died on September 13, at twenty-five. The Don Killuminati came out seven weeks later. The murder has never been tried in court; a long-time suspect was indicted in 2023, and the proceedings are ongoing.
What remains
A voice you can pick out of a thousand, a repertoire where rage and tenderness sit side by side without transition, film roles that promised a second career, a collection of poems (The Rose That Grew from Concrete), and an influence rap still has not finished metabolizing. The induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, in 2017, only confirmed the obvious.
